American Airlines New Ways To Retain Your AAdvantage Elite Status Through January 31, 2023

American Airlines today launched two new programs that allow Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, and Executive Platinum members to retain their status through January 31, 2023.

One option is to swipe cobranded credit cards to the tune of $15K between July 15 – November 15, or earn $2,000 Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs) on American or partner flights between September 1 – December 31, 2021.

You can access AA’s page for updates here.

Here is more information about these two options:

Spend $15,000 on an AAdvantage® credit card

  • You’ll retain your AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status through January 31, 2023, if you spend at least $15,000 on eligible purchases with an eligible AAdvantage® credit card between July 15 – November 15, 2021.

Fly on American or one of our partner airlines

  • You’ll retain your AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum status through January 31, 2023, if you earn at least $2,000 Elite Qualifying Dollars (EQDs) on eligible airline tickets flown between September 1 – December 31, 2021.

Conclusion

American Airlines is becoming rather generous in its quest to retain its elite members, many of whom live in markets outside of the United States where travel restrictions are still in place. So perhaps it would be the right time to have one policy for the members in the United States and those elsewhere?

I have a lifetime Platinum status being a Million Miler with the airline (most of those miles came from non-flying), and the Executive Platinum was based on my Hyatt tier the other year.

Here are the terms and conditions of these two offers:

Elite retention through AAdvantage® credit card spend terms and conditions

The AAdvantage® Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro, or Executive Platinum elite status level held as of January 1, 2021, will be retained through January 31, 2023 for the primary cardholder (“you”, “your”) if the member spends $15,000 (USD) on eligible purchases made with eligible Citi® / AAdvantage®, AAdvantage® Aviator® credit cards, or AAdvantage® credit cards issued outside the U.S. between July 15, 2021 and November 15, 2021. This offer may not be achievable based on the assigned credit line and ability to maintain that credit line.

AAdvantage® program elite status requirements

Spend on purchases may be combined across all eligible AAdvantage® credit cards to reach the $15,000 requirement to retain AAdvantage Gold, Platinum, Platinum Pro or Executive Platinum elite status for 2022. The elite status retention offer will not be applied to members if spending an amount less than $15,000. All Citi® / AAdvantage®, all AAdvantage® Aviator® and all AAdvantage® credit cards issued outside the U.S. are eligible.

Eligible purchases, defined as purchases, including those made by authorized users on your account, less credits, returns and adjustments, made with your Citi® / AAdvantage®, AAdvantage® Aviator® credit card, and AAdvantage® cards issued outside the U.S. that post as base miles to your AAdvantage® account between July 15, 2021 and December 15, 2021 will count toward your qualifying spend.

For cards issued in the U.S., purchases exclude balance transfers, cash advances, checks that access your credit card account, items and services returned for credit, unauthorized charges, interest and account fees, traveler’s checks, purchases of foreign currency, money orders, wire transfers (and similar cash-like transactions), lottery tickets, and gaming chips (and similar betting transactions).

To determine the correct spend towards the $15,000, dollars spent will be calculated using the AAdvantage® “base” or “spend” miles (i.e. not counting bonus miles) earned and posted to your account, and then applying the mileage earn rate applicable to the type of AAdvantage® card used by you to make the purchase. For example, if the credit card used has a 1:1 ratio of dollars spent to base miles earned and 100 miles were posted to your AAdvantage® account, then you would be credited with $100 of spend towards the $15,000.

This promotion does not affect the elite status of members with lifetime elite status, or the elite status of members who have already met the qualification requirements for 2022 elite status (the same or higher elite status level as such members held on January 1, 2021) as of June 23, 2021. Temporary elite status held due to a promotion is not eligible for status retention.

Those retaining Executive Platinum or Platinum Pro status through this promotion will not be eligible for 2022 elite choice rewards unless the member meets the 2021 elite qualification requirements for Executive Platinum or Platinum Pro.
