Marriott is about to lose two W Hotels in Washington D.C. And Atlanta Midtown. Both are legacy Starwood properties.
The W in Washington exits on August 31 and supposedly becomes an independent hotel, and W Atlanta Midtown has already disappeared on Marriott’s website and becomes Curio Collection by Hilton.
W Washington D.C.
There is an ownership change of this hotel, and the new owner has decided to deflag the property. The hotel likely goes independent that could work well for it due to recent renovations and a highly desirable location.
The last date to book and stay at W Washington D.C. is August 30th, 2021. The hotel exits the Marriott system on September 1st.
W Atlanta Midtown
The hotel has already gone from Marriott’s website and only returns an error.
There appears to be a change in the progress to transform this hotel into a Curio Collection hotel by Hilton.
It is normal for hotels to exit systems, go independent or reflag, but the Covid-19 has accelerated the progress.
Perhaps hotels that both under and overperform consider the best path and brand for them going forward and how much being part of a system is beneficial for them.
W Washington is strong enough to become an independent hotel that will likely do well. W Atlanta Midtown is not as strong and certainly benefits from being part of Hilton under Curio Collection.
