There is a new twist in the saga of shocking accusations a German, Jewish musician made in early October against staff of The Westin Leipzig as a thorough police investigation of the incident came back without results that would prove the original version of events.
After checking CCTV footage and taking numerous statements German police has stated that the version given by the singer can’t be corroborated and he already got defamation charges filed against him by the employee he outed as an antisemite.
The incident made international headlines when musician Gil Ofarim accused staff of the Westin Leipzig of rather vile antisemitic behavior and posted an Instagram video at the night of his check-in that was viewed over 3.5 million times.
John reported about this incident when it broke based on the media reports on that day:
Since then two weeks have gone by and Leipzig Police took the matter extremely seriously, taking statements and reviewing video footage of the hotel lobby.
In a statement the police spokesperson made clear that the incident as stated by Mr. Ofarim is unlikely to have happened in the way described and that video footage doesn’t even show his “star of David” necklace that appeared to be the centerpiece of this shocking situation.
Stern Magazine reported a few hours ago that police is having doubts about what actually happened.
Translation as per Google translate:
… But now the Leipzig police apparently have “serious doubts” about Ofarim’s version of the events. This is reported by “Bild am Sonntag” and shows footage from the surveillance cameras of the Westin hotels. There is no chain around Ofarim’s neck on it as he enters the hotel, speaks to someone at the front desk, and as he leaves the Westin. The musician wears an open leather jacket with a T-shirt underneath. According to the BamS report, Ofarim is said to have stated in an interrogation to the police that he did not know exactly whether he had worn the necklace with the large, silver Star of David openly that evening in Leipzig or not.…
That doesn’t sound like what he initially said in his video where Ofarim emphasized on the entire incident being centered on him displaying his jewelry with the star of david on it.
As verified through video footage made available by the hotel, no such necklace is visible during his check-in process and hence it’s highly unlikely someone could have called him out for wearing it unless these individuals have x-ray eyesight:
According to the article he’s now saying things like “it’s not about the necklace but a much wider issue…”.
The employee that was outed by the musician has already filed a police complaint for defamation against Ofarim on the very next day after the story broke and a sh*tstorm started. A week after the alleged incident Ofarim himself filed a complaint with a police department in Munich.
We’re talking about serious accusations here. Should this turn out to be a hoax motivated by whatever horrific idea then there are serious consequences for Ofarim. In the meanwhile the employees involved have been placed on temporary leave by the hotel which was also done for their own security as well as to give the property breathing room to investigate and also support the police.
When a German musician made strong antisemitism complaints against two employees of the Westin Hotel in Leipzig, Germany many were shocked about the alleged incident and gave him support. He described everything in detail including the entire situation being initiated by his necklace which now appears he didn’t even wear openly. Things don’t add up as even the police now admits.
Hate crimes like the one described are serious and many people suffer from it every day on a global scale. The police is now looking at it from an angle that something isn’t right with this incident and if Ofarim is found out to have lied to the police and slandered the property then there will be rather bad consequences for him. I think we all can remember what happened to Jussie Smollett and his hate crime hoax in Chicago which had a severe impact on his career.
