Morocco has taken quite a drastic step today and banned flights from the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands effective midnight today due to increasing covid-19 infection rates in these countries.
British Airways and EasyJet have canceled flights to Marrakesh today, and Royal Air Maroc has suspended flights from affected destinations.
Here’s what Royal Air Maroc posted on their Twitter:
To support our passengers during this period, unlimited changes of ticket date and destination, free of charge until December 15,2021 to the same or another destination are authorized.
— Royal Air Maroc (@RAM_Maroc) October 20, 2021
Passengers on flights from these three countries are eligible for a full refund if their ticketed flight is canceled, although the national airline of Morocco tries to push vouchers.
It is unclear if only direct flights from these countries are banned or visitors who have been in them over the past couple of weeks or those on connecting flights?
There could be other surprises coming now when the Covid-19 rates are again increasing in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly killing non-vaccinated, although infecting others too.
I still would be hesitant to buy advance travel, as there can be last-minute changes to entry requirements with minimal notice like what Morocco did today.
