Chase Ultimate Rewards is currently offering card members a 50% “Holiday Bonus” when moving Ultimate Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy.
Members receive 1.5 Marriott points for each UR point (1) transferred which represents a 50% bonus but still a rather bad ratio as far as value is concerned.
Chase Ultimate Rewards points are some of my favorite multi-use points currencies (together with American Express membership rewards) meaning that they can be converted to a variety of different travel partners and even cash.
As such I’m quite wary when it comes to using the points that I really get a decent, maximum value out of them which sometimes isn’t as easy as it sounds.
This particular transfer promotion from Chase to Marriott sounds big – 50% – and it was just advertised yet again in the monthly mailers Chase sends to their customers who participate in Ultimate Rewards.
Chase sent an email out to Ultimate Rewards members today advising of the campaign:
Take your points 50% further with Marriott Bonvoy®
Now through, transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to Marriott Bonvoy for 50% more value. Terms apply.
Here is the offer in detail from the Ultimate Rewards Travel Partner Transfer page:
While 50% is indeed a large bonus one should consider carefully if this offer really makes sense. Marriott rewards pricing for hotels has gotten rather expensive and you’ll need at least 50,000-60,000 points for most nice hotels.
This month I was looking for a hotel in Koh Samui and Marriott Bonvoy was asking 60,000 points to stay at the Vana Belle as an alternative to a $170 cash rate on their BAR (2 for 1 Offer).
Needless to say such a redemption doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. You’d be a lot better off just paying cash and using Chase Pay Yourself Back or transferring to airline miles to get a much better deal:
- Transfer Chase to Marriott: 40,000 UR Points -> 60,000 Marriott Rewards vs.
- Paying Cash: $170 -> 11,330 UR Points via Pay Yourself Back (1.5 cpm at the moment)
Not to talk about that there are numerous transfer partners where a points transfer would be more lucrative such as Hyatt where even without a transfer promotion 30,000 points would net you a top of the line property.
You can always transfer 60,000 Bonvoy points to various airline programs and receive 25,000 Miles in return (10% more with United per their special partnership).
Generally speaking for Marriott Rewards points it’s very difficult to find a great earning option via credit cards other than the Marriott co-branded cards themselves (and those mostly with Marriott spend).
Chase Sapphire Reserve for example offers 3 points per USD spent on various categories including travel and dining. It’s still very hard to make the value work with Marriott Bonvoy for transfers.
Using this 50% transfer promotion makes sense if your Marriott property has a decent (low) redemption rate and the retail cash price is rather high or to top up an account with a small amount to reach a significant award milestone such as a travel package or 5-night redemption.
Otherwise I’d explore other options to make use of the UR points, either by transferring it to another partner or by using Pay Yourself Back while it’s still available for 1.5 cents per point value on certain categories including dining.
