There have been quite a few cases from readers who have had negative experiences with Marriott-affiliated hotels lately, so I thought it would be good to feature one where old-style service still exists.
I had some flight issues this past Wednesday (more of that over the weekend), and I ended up at Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport needing a hotel for the night. I booked the Marriott hotel close to the airport, as I wasn’t going to take a ride to the city and back to the airport the following day (hours wasted).

The executive lounge at the hotel is still closed, but they provide breakfast in the restaurant (I didn’t use) and a drink voucher (I didn’t use it as I don’t drink).
I placed an in-room dining order using the online system they have (you just order on a specific website and indicate your last name and room number) without having to place a call.
My keycard wasn’t working at some point in the afternoon, and I stopped at the front desk after visiting the fitness center. I also mentioned that I would like to have my bill settled at that time so that I could leave after showering and changing clothes.
I had seven items from the minibar, and the front desk agent, the same person who checked me in the night before, told me that the minibar was complimentary for Titanium members (I was not told this before) there was nothing to settle.
The dinner was comped earlier, without me asking for anything, when I had a word with the Manager on Duty about a minor service issue.
Not sure how many Marriott’s there are left with L’Occitane bathroom amenities?
This is old-style hospitality that you used to get at most Marriott affiliated hotels; professionally run and issues resolved without having to even prompt. Perfect.
The airport Marriott in Sao Paulo is not the most modern but adequate for an overnight stay if you arrive late, leave early, or have just missed a flight.
