While waiting for the NH Hotels to join the Global Hotel Alliance (GHA), the South Africa based Sun International with its Sun City, has become part of the GHA and is Discovery participating.
Sun International brings ten more hotels to the GHA, and all but one of them is located in South Africa.

Conclusion
GHA Discovery has become a more seriously taken program with its recent refresh that allows members to earn Discovery Dollars that can be used for free nights or other on-property expenses (previously only guest recognition program) + NH Hotels joining soon.
They probably don’t get much attention in North America due to the lack of participating hotels in the Americas.
