American Airlines continues its miles sale for 2022, and the expiry of the current one is unclear (could be permanent). You can buy AAdvantage miles at 35% off, but American has raised its base price.
American Airlines allows AAdvantage members to buy up to 150,000 miles before any bonuses. The limit is occasionally increased. The account that purchases or receives the miles must have been open for a minimum of 30 days.
You can access this offer on AA’s website here.
Here’s the discount table:
The price of 150,000 miles at 35% off:
The price of a mile at 35% off in January was 2.1 cents each and now 2.45, a rise of 15%.
The lowest price AAdvantage miles sold in 2020 was 1.72 cents and in 2021 1.77 cents each.
Conclusion
American Airlines has jacked up the price of its AAdvantage miles in January, and it is difficult to suggest to anyone that they should buy at 2.45 US cents each. There can, however, be some cases even when this can make sense if the award pricing is reasonable between otherwise costly, in cash, city pairs.
This is a high price to purchase American Airlines AAdvantage miles, considering all the airline’s sales throughout the year. Unless you need AA miles NOW, I would wait for a better deal to resurface.
