Each year at the 40-night mark, World of Hyatt members can select another Milestone Award which is either a US$100 gift card, 5000 points, or a 10,000 points discount on an Experience Package.
I just received my annual email making that selection and haven’t yet decided whether to go for the $100 gift card or the 5000 points credit for this year.
Normally the gift card is the most logical and valuable choice given that I’m in North America relatively often to use it but what about the other options!?
When Hyatt revamped their loyalty program into World of Hyatt they also introduced Milestone Awards which reward members on their way up the status ladder throughout the membership year. I found this new system to be very profitable, especially the free night awards in between.
This was the list of options they sent me yesterday for the 40-night mark:
The issue here is to determine which selection provides the best value. As mentioned before, normally I choose the gift card but with hotel prices being up and some decent award options available for low points nominations (Bali Hyatt, Grand Hyatt Bali) the points could actually make sense this year.
You can access World of Hyatt Benefits and Milestones schedule here.
Beyond the 40th Milestone you get two Suite Upgrade Awards for the 50th night and at the 60th Night 1 Category 1-7 Free Night Award and 2 Suite Upgrade Awards as well as access to My Hyatt Concierge.
For every 10 nights thereafter it’s either one suite upgrade or 10,000 points. This however is capped at the 100th night and Hyatt doesn’t offer anything more after that. Not sure why Hyatt wouldn’t want to incentivize some “super stayers” to stick with them beyond 100 nights.
As far as the choice for the 40 Night Milestone goes, if you don’t want to lose much time over it then either way it’s pretty much a wash as it’s almost always possible to find a 2-cent per point redemption value when redeeming Hyatt points in a sensible manner. It’s also a very universal currency that can be used worldwide while the gift card has strict geographical limitations on it (available to use in the Americas only):
Hyatt eGift Cards are issued by Hyatt Fulfilment of Maryland, Inc. and can be redeemed at participating Hyatt hotels and resorts in the Americas
Hyatt Gift Card (valid at participating Hyatt hotels in the Americas, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean)
If this limitation creates a problem for you then the choice is clear to pick the points as your award choice.
It’s a nice extra to be able to pick 5000 points or $100 just for hitting 40 nights with WOH, especially as with 30 nights I already received a free night at a Cat 4 property.
The next free night Cat 1-7 will be at 60 nights when re-qualifying for Globalist. This is going to be the first year where Hyatt will actively require members to stay 60 nights for Globalist requalification. Previously it was 55 nights for status renewal, then Hyatt made a change to require the full 60 nights but during Covid, this was halved.
Maybe there will be some other policy or promotion coming until the end of the year as we just have June but who knows. I rather err on the side of caution and have racked up 44 nights so far.
As far as the gift card is concerned, there are a few properties at the 5,000 and 8,000 points level where it’ll be easy to exceed the $100 value by selecting the points. What would you pick?
