American Airlines and GOL reintroduced their partnership after Delta took a stake in LATAM that decided to exit Oneworld as a result.
AAdvantage members have been able to book GOL awards online since last month (read more here), previously they were only available for those called in. There are also some elite benefits for American Airlines and GOL elite members on each other’s flights.
You can access AA’s page for GOL benefits here.
AAdvantage Elite Benefits on GOL:
Here’s the small print:
*Check-in is only available at the airport ticket counter.
^Includes 1 companion for AAdvantage Platinum®, AAdvantage Gold® and up to 8 companions for AAdvantage Executive Platinum® and AAdvantage Platinum Pro®. For flights marketed by American and operated by GOL, customers will need to contact GOL Reservations for seat selection or choose seats at the airport (kiosk or agent).
**AAdvantage Gold® members can choose GOL+ Conforto Seats at time of check-in (at time of booking for all other status members) by contacting GOL Reservations.
GOL Elite Benefits on AA:
SMILES Diamond members and their companions receive access to complimentary Main Cabin Extra seats and Preferred seats, plus priority check-in, priority security, priority boarding and priority baggage when flying on American-operated flights.
- GOL Awards Now Available On American’s Website
- American Airlines & GOL Deepens Partnership
- American Airlines AAdvantage & GOL Smiles Reciprocal Earning & Redeem Effective May 7, 2020
- American Airlines & GOL Codeshare Agreement
I was looking into GOL flights, as I will be in South America later this month and could perhaps fly on GOL now that their awards are available for bookings on AA’s website.
Unfortunately, there is no extra luggage allowance for AA elite members on GOL, as there used to be with LATAM when they were part of the Oneworld alliance.
All domestic flights that GOL sells (not sure if within South America too) are with no checked luggage.
You should never book intra-Brazil flights on GOL’s website, setting your location to the US or other parts of the world (only two English options). You will then see only the rip-off rates. Instead, book the flights on an OTA such as Orbitz that has access to intra-Brazil pricing.
GOL intra-Brazil flights using AAdvantage miles are great value at 7.5K miles each way with minimal taxes.
