United Airlines Mileage Plus has launched yet another new sale to buy miles at a 100% bonus (some offers are targeted) through July 26, 2022.
United Airlines has promotions monthly for buying miles, but they all max out at a 100% bonus or a 50% discount.
The airline occasionally increases the number of miles you can buy in a calendar year from 175,000 to 250,000.
You can access and see your bonus on United’s website here.
The good thing about this promotion is that the 100% bonus threshold kicks in with as little as 40k miles to purchase.
Here is the price with 100% Bonus:
The cost of a mile under this offer is 1.88 cents each. This has pretty much become the standard for Mileage Plus miles nowadays.
Does it make sense to purchase the United miles?
If you use them for international business or first-class tickets between expensive city pairs, the answer is probably yes.
United has stopped publishing award charts but recently launched a website that featured award deals (read more here), and Star Alliance charts are now gone (read more here). In addition, many awards have become way overpriced in the number of MileagePlus miles required (read more here).
It can make sense to buy miles if you redeem them for an international premium cabin award, and an added advantage is that you can always cancel and redeposit the miles (with or without a fee) if there are travel restrictions or bans in place or last-minute other changes that happen in life.
This is the lowest price that United sells its miles continuously throughout the year and has done so several times now. Whenever you buy miles it’s best to have a good idea what to do with them in the near future.
