Some IHG One Rewards members have been surprised to find significant deductions from their member accounts in the last week regarding the latest global promotion.
IHG launched an offer for double, triple, and quadruple points for stays between May 18 – August 31, 2022 (read more here), with a big caveat that many have not paid any attention to.
You can access this offer on IHG’s website here.

One of the emails received this week from IHG:
The promo email that I received for the umpteenth time from the IHG is clear. You earn 2X, 3X, and 4X for all your stays through the end of August.
WRONG! There is a note at the bottom of the email that you agree to the campaign Terms and Conditions:
Nobody wants to read long T&Cs, but this is very important for you to understand the possible limitations of the offer that the company doesn’t really want to disclose. (Always read the footnotes!)
The bonus points earning structure for “2X points”, “3X points”, and “4X points” is described in more detail below and is subject to a total promotional bonus points cap of 100,000 points.
There is a note on the small print that the maximum number of bonus points that you can earn from this offer is capped at just 100,000.
This may sound like a lot, but you have to remember that you earn 10 points per USD at most IHG brands, and you can easily reach the maximum by staying a lot (you don’t even have to stay a lot but merely pay $$$$ rates) at their hotels during the offer period.
How to find out how many points you have already earned?
IHG lists the points earned from this promotion separate in your account statement:
My four stays during the promo period have earned 30,696 bonus points, and I have six more nights coming. Therefore, if I had an additional stay of $2K or so, I would exceed the maximum number of points earned from this offer ($2K would earn a 60,000 bonus under quadruple points – 3X in reality because of the base points earned).
IHG One Rewards could have better communicated on the email BODY and not hidden on the T&Cs the maximum number of bonus points that a member can earn.
Unfortunately, some members will see hundreds of thousands of points removed from their IHG accounts due to the cap.
Hilton Honors, Marriott Bonvoy, and World of Hyatt don’t have earning caps on global bonus offers (they sometimes do on targeted ones).
