Air France – KLM Flying Blue Continues Status Extensions In Select Markets Through September 2022

Air France – KLM Flying has made a surprise move and continues status extensions in select markets between July 31 – September 30, 2022.

Most hospitality sector companies have extended elite member tiers for the duration of the pandemic, but these practices have mostly ended.

You can access Flying Blue’s page for extensions here.

The latest status extension extends to the following markets:

  • Australia
  • China
  • Hong Kong
  • Indonesia
  • Japan
  • Macao
  • Malaysia
  • New Zealand
  • Philippines
  • Russia
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Taipei
  • Thailand
  • Ukraine
  • Vietnam

Flying Blue will credit eligible member accounts the number of XPs required to maintain their current status.

Examples From Flying Blue:

Surplus XP Support

As an extension of our previous measure, we will automatically top up the surplus XP for Elite members with residential address in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taipei, Thailand, Ukraine or Vietnam, and a qualification period between now and September 2022, if it’s lower than last year. That way, you don’t miss out on maintaining or boosting your status. The surplus XP support will be added within a month after the start of your new qualification period.

Will I benefit from surplus XP support?

You will benefit from surplus XP support in case:

  • you are a Flying Blue Silver, Gold or Platinum member;
  • your qualification period ends between now and September 2022 (previously June 2022);
  • your residential address is in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taipei, Thailand, Ukraine or Vietnam; and
  • your current surplus XP is lower than it was at the beginning of your previous qualification period.

Some examples:

A Silver member with a qualification period ending in September 2022:

  • If you have gained 120 XP, your counter will be offset by 100 XP to maintain Silver and you keep a surplus of 20 XP.
  • If you had a surplus of 60 XP in your previous qualification period (ending in September 2021), we credit you 40 XP (surplus XP support) within a month, so you again have a head start of 60 XP.

A Gold member with a qualification period ending in September 2022:

  • If you have gained 220 XP, your counter will be offset by 180 XP to maintain Gold and you keep a surplus of 40 XP.
  • If you had a surplus of 80 XP in your previous qualification period (ending in September 2021), we credit you 40 XP (surplus XP support) within a month, so you again have a head start of 80 XP.

A Platinum member with a qualification period ending in September 2022:

  • If you have gained 450 XP, your counter will be offset by 300 XP to maintain Platinum and you keep a surplus of 150 XP.
  • If you had a surplus of 250 XP in your previous qualification period (ending in September 2021), we credit you 100 XP (surplus XP support) within a month, so you again have a head start of 250 XP.

What members benefit from surplus XP support?

If you are a Silver, Gold or Platinum member with residential address in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Taipei, Thailand, Ukraine or Vietnam and your qualification period ends between now and September 2022 (previously June 2022), you may benefit from protected surplus XP. Explorer members do not have surplus XP.

Conclusion

It does make sense for Flying Blue to extend member tiers in these markets due to the difficulty of traveling to and from them in the past 12 months.

Also, it wouldn’t surprise me if Flying Blue decides to extend this practice for members in China and Japan past this coming September.

What happens to my years counting towards Platinum for life?

If you keep your current level during your next qualification period based on our special measures, that membership year will count towards the 10 consecutive years needed to qualify for Platinum for life. For example:

  • You have been a Platinum member for 9 consecutive years, and your qualification period ended on 31 December 2021. Because of our measures, you have maintained and reached 10 consecutive years of Platinum. On 1 April 2022, we changed your level to Platinum for life.
  • You have been a Platinum member for 3 consecutive years, and your current qualification period will end on 31 August 2022. Because of our measures, you will be maintained. On 1 September 2022, your 4th consecutive year of Platinum will start.

What happens if my qualification period ends after 30 September 2022?

Stay tuned for more ways of gaining XP in 2022. Since the situation is still evolving, we will continue monitoring it closely.
