The “Hawaii of China” Sanya island has been in lockdown with more than 80,000 tourists since last Saturday when covid cases rose in the area.
Grand Hyatt Sanya has decided to become a covid-19 quarantine hotel and is kicking out all the guests who have no place to go, based on a Facebook post from the hotel.

Grand Hyatt Sanya made a snap announcement that it is evicting its guests to make the hotel a Covid quarantine hotel.
The problem is there are not other places to go or flights available to leave the island.
A few hours ago, after a long set of negotiations from some guests, the hotel and local government said they would allow those remaining to stay at the hotel until flights became available. But now they are again saying everyone has to leave.
Meanwhile there are confirmed Covid cases at nearby hotels and risk of getting Covid if we leave. No guarantee that there is a safe place to go. Lots of vacationing families with children.
Not easily scared but things aren’t very good right now. Potentially volatile situation.
Conclusion
China’s goal of being covid-19 free is absurd, as the country’s various lockdowns this past few months have demonstrated.
Covid-19 is not going to go away, and the best that the Chinese authorities can do is to have the population vaccinated using effective vaccines and let the virus run through the people.
There have been charter flights out of Sanya since yesterday but in a very limited number. So I guess that most of the tourists on the island must spend some time there until the lockdown is lifted and regular flight schedules restored.
A miserable situation for many families who decided to spend some time vacationing there.
