American Airlines has today announced changes to its AAdvantage frequent spending (previously frequent flier) program in 2023.
The main changes are a 60% cut on the number of miles earned on the lowest fares, more frequent milestone rewards, no need for AA segments (who would want to fly on AA?), and no cap on the number of miles earned on a ticket (previously 75K).
You can access AA’s page for changes here.
Basic Economy Cut
The number of miles earned on Basic Economy tickets is cut to 2 from 5.
No Earnings Cap
There is no longer a 75,000 miles cap on the number of miles earned on a ticket.
Segment Requirement Dropped
There is no longer requirement to reach several American segments to unlock specific award levels.
Loyalty Point Rewards
There are more Loyalty Point Rewards for up to 5,000,000.
Conclusion
You can reach American Airlines Executive Platinum status without ever setting foot inside an airplane, and I am sure many have done it.
But does it make ANY sense?
Why would you collect AAdvantage miles or systemwide upgrades if the miles requirements are sky-high or upgrade certificates close to impossible to confirm in advance?
