Finnair & Air Berlin Award Inventory Now Available on AA.com

American Airlines has slowly expanded the number of airlines that are bookable on AA.com. Finnair and Air Berlin just joined Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Hawaiian, and Qantas that were introduced earlier this year.

american-airlines-finnair-air-berlin

This makes booking awards online that connect to American or Qantas flights easier if you try to avoid British Airways metal due to very high fuel surcharges.

Here’s a simple search from Helsinki to Honolulu. The engine was able to find the business class availability by combining Finnair, Air Berlin, and American Airlines.

american-airlines-ab-ay-hel-hnl

If you can avoid London Heathrow and British Airways, you can keep the taxes at rather reasonable level.

Conclusion

It is very good that American makes more of their partners bookable online as United has already done. American still has more than 15 partners that they could implement to their online award searches. I hope that they would speed up the process.

There are not offers from oneworld (British Airways, American Airlines and Iberia), Star Alliance (United), and SkyTeam (Delta) for transatlantic travel this fall/winter. The bonus amounts and travel periods are identical. United and Delta offers are only for direct flights from United States to London Heathrow where oneworld offers are valid for all direct flights from United States and Canada to Europe that are marketed and operated by on BA (OpenSKies also qualifies for BA’s version of this offer), AA, and IB.

The promotion cannot be combined with any other offers valid during this period. Errors and/or omissions will be rendered invalid.

Air France-KLM, Etihad & airberlin to Form Strategic Partnership

The news that broke before the announcement of Qatar joining the oneworld alliance was the agreement between Etihad and Air France-KLM about strategic codesharing partnership that will take place.

air-france-klm-etihad-airberlin

Air France and KLM will codeshare to certain destinations operated by Etihad via Doha. Etihad will codeshare to some European destinations operated by Air France and KLM. Airberlin will codeshare also with Air France and KLM.

Airberlin is oneworld member airline and both Air France and KLM are members of the competing SkyTeam. Etihad owns part of airberlin and has provided loans to the airline. It is on Etihad’s best interest to ensure that airberlin is successful and stops losing money.

The website airlineroute.net, which specializes to airline route news, posted the following route/codesharing update about Air France, KLM, Etihad and airberlin yesterday:

At first look the number of destinations that the airlines codeshare isn’t that great. Air France still has a codeshare agreement in place with Qantas regarding Australia. but Qantas has announced that it will drop it due to the agreement between Qantas and Emirates. Maybe Air France-KLM will tunnel their Australian traffic via Abu Dhabi on Etihad in the future?

The situation with the airberlin is just weird. The airline just officially joined the oneworld alliance earlier this year and was sponsored by British Airways. Now, the airline starts codesharing agreement with Air France & KLM that are both part of the SkyTeam alliance.

Conclusion

This is interesting development and might skew Etihad to join SkyTeam at some point in the future. These codeshare agreements aren’t that beneficial for the consumers unless the airlines are going to form a deeper partnerships and start honoring each other’s frequent flier benefits as well.

Etihad also has a codesharing agreement with American Airlines. Both airlines’ frequent fliers can redeem miles on each others flights.

Qatar Airways Joins Oneworld in 2013/2014

There has been lot of noise in the past two weeks about the press conference that was going to take place in New York today. The CEO of Qatar Airways denied that the airline would have been joining the alliance last week contradictory what was published on Financial Times.

oneworld invites Qatar Airways on board

The airline is indeed joining the Oneworld alliance and completion of becoming a member is expected to take from 12 to 18 months. So, we are looking late 2013 or early 2014 as likely official joining date for Qatar. You can access the official Oneworld press release here.

qatar-oneworld-official

Currently the oneworld alliance consists of eleven member airlines; airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Qantas, Royal Jordanian and S7 Airlines.

oneworld-wings

Malaysian Airlines and SriLankan Airlines are currently in the process of joining the alliance. Oneworld alliance member Malev went bankrupt earlier this year and the joining of Kingfisher Airlines was cancelled due to its financial difficulties.

Qatar is the first of the big three of the Middle Eastern carriers to join an alliance. Emirates has always said that they are not interested in joining and they just formed a partnership with oneworld member airline Qantas. Etihad announced earlier today the deep codesharing agreement that they are going forward with Air France-KLM.

It is interesting that Qatar chose Oneworld. It has had more frequent flier ties with Star Alliance carriers like United, US Airways, and BMI than with oneworld ones (none).

The airline already serves 120 destinations worldwide. The latest one was reintroduction of flights to Yangon, the capitol of Myanmar, last week.

Americas

The airline flies to New York, Washington DC, Chicago (in 2013), Houston, Montreal and to Sao Paulo with a continuing service to Buenos Aires.

Europe, North Africa & Middle East

The airline serves more than 30 destinations on continental Europe. The airline has an extensive network in Northern Africa and in the Middle East.

Africa

qatar-airways-africa

The airline serves nine destinations in Central and Southern Africa + Seychelles.

Indian Subcontinent & Asia

qatar-airways-route-map-asia

The airline servers number of destinations in India and Asia.

Australia

The airline currently serves both Perth and Melbourne

Conclusion

This is interesting movie from Qatar’s part. We’ll see if Star Alliance is able to lure either Emirates or Etihad. For the most part, I have liked the service that I have received on Qatar flights. I am not huge fan of the transfer experience in Doha, but it should get better in 2013 when the new airport is ready.

American Airlines Buy Miles October Offer: Up To 10K Bonus Miles

American Airlines has had almost monthly promotions for buying miles. Thing to remember is that you can only buy or be gifted maximum of 40K American Airlines AAdvantage miles on a calendar year.

american-airlines-buy-miles-october-offer

The current offer is for maximum of 10K bonus miles for buying 36K to 40K AAdvantage miles. If you buy the minimum required to get the maximum bonus, the price of a mile under this offer is 2.4 cents each.

american-airlines-buy-miles-october-price-for-36k

Conclusion

This is not the best offer for buying American Airlines AAdvantage miles that have been out there lately. If you do, however, need a number of miles to make that international business/first class trip to happen, it can make sense.

American Airlines and Loose Airline Seats Press Conference Parody

There has been a lot of news this week with loose seats on American Airlines. In one occasion the airline had to do an emergency landing when one of the rose had come loose during the flight. The airline is investigating what is the reason for this.

On the lighter side, Gailen David, the man behind the website Dear Sky Steward and former American Airlines flight attendant, made a parody video of an American Airlines press conference about the incident.

Conclusion

Loose airline seats are most definitely a problem and a safety hazard. Not quite sure what is happening with the AA maintenance.

There has been a lot press this week about the recent upsurge on flight cancellations and delays on American Airlines. The first major piece was by Scott McCartney who is a WSJ’s columnist.

The labor relations on American Airlines have been in turmoil already for some time. The pilots have been increasingly dissatisfied with the management and would prefer the airline merging with the US Airways.

On September 5 this month the bankruptcy court approved the AA’s motion to reject pilots contract and the current delays & cancellations are, according to American Airlines latest email, due to increase in maintenance write ups from pilots very close to departure time. Most of these maintenance issues could be deferred and dealt with some later time.

American Airlines Departures & Arrivals September 20th
American Airlines Departures & Arrivals September 20th

The numbers for yesterday aren’t pretty. American Airlines cancelled 4.5% of its departures. Both the on time departure at 61% and the on time arrival at 51% are very bad.

Also, American Airlines has decided to trim their September & October flight schedule by 1% to 2%, but they haven’t released a list of canceled flights.

Here’s what an American Airlines is willing to do Gold/Platinum/Executive Platinum members in case of delays of 1 hour or more:

1. Arrange other fight even on competing carrier

2. Receive a refund

If you do not have status with American Airlines, the airline is currently promising the following:

1. Ability to standby for earlier flights

And if your flight has been delayed by more than two hours:

2. Accommodate on other carrier

3. Receive full refund

4. Change your plans without fees

What you should do to avoid being caught with the turmoil?

1. Sign up for email alerts regarding your flights.

2. Check the flight status online using my itineraries.

3. Check the flight status on www.aacargo.com website. Sometimes flight cancellations are posted there earlier.

4. Be aware of alternate options even on other carriers.

5. If you are at the airport when cancellation happens, you may have better luck getting rebooked at the Admirals Cub.

6. If you have status with AA, try calling the elite number behind your card. Be warned that the wait times can be long at times.

7. If you get rebooked on other carrier, ask AA to print out the flight coupon on paper i.e. paper ticket. I had AA rebook me the other year but the process didn’t go right. Continental was not able to pull up the ticket and I had to ask AA to print it on paper.

8. Try booking flights without connections if possible. Lot of flights are delayed and can cause misconnects. Yesterday only 51% of the flights arrived on time.

On the positive side, if you get rebooked on alternate carrier, you can get EQM’s (Elite Qualifying Miles) and RDM’s (Redeemable Miles) on both carriers. If you get rebooked on Delta, United, US Airways etc, remember to have alternate frequent flier number handy for those flights. Later, you need to call American Airlines and request an original routing credit.

Conclusion

United Airlines has operational issues since the merge with Continental Airlines. Now, American Airlines is having problems with its pilot union. It is not nice when you get caught in the middle and inconvenienced during your travels. Eventually this will be over and American will be back to its regular operations.

Triple American Airlines AAdvantage Miles for Radisson/Radisson Blu Stays

Radisson & Radisson Blu hotels are offering triple (1500) American Airlines AAdvantage miles per stay from September 1st to December 20th, 2012. You need to provide your AAdvantage number at check in and cannot earn Club Carlson God points for the stays. Here’s the link to this offer.

american-airlines-radisson-radisson-blu-triple-miles

Regardless of the number of nights, you will receive flat 1500 miles per STAY.

This offer only makes sense if you are staying at a very inexpensive Radisson/Radisson Blu property or don’t plan on collecting Gold points at all. You can always transfer 100000 God points to 18K American Airlines AAdvantage miles. Five $200 Radisson/Radisson Blu stays would earn you in excess of 100000 points and could be transferred to 18K American Airlines miles.

Conclusion

You need to calculate how many Gold points you would earn from your stay compared to flat 1500 American Airlines miles. For me this offer doesn’t make sense at all.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

The Triple Miles Offer (“Promotion”) is available for new reservations at participating Radisson and Radisson Blu Hotels & Resorts (“Participating Properties”) for Eligible Stays beginning September 01, 2012 and completed by December 20, 2012 (“Promotional Period”). An Eligible Stay is defined as a stay of one or more nights at the same hotel regardless of the number of times you check-in or check-out during the stay at an eligible rate. Ineligible rates under the Promotion include employee rates; airline crew rates; travel agent rates; hotel employee rates; tour operator rates; wholesaler rates; rates booked through online travel companies; complimentary rooms, including, but not limited to, rooms booked as Award Night stays, or other stays involving other gift certificate or free night vouchers. American Airlines AAdvantage members who provide their member number at the time of check-in can earn a total of 1,500 AAdvantage miles for each Eligible Stay during the Promotional Period. There is no maximum on the number of Eligible Stays that can qualify for the bonus during the Promotional Period. Rates for each night may vary. Mileage is subject to all AAdvantage program rules and regulations. Participating Properties are subject to change without notice. Offer subject to availability and blackout dates may apply. Gold Points® may not be earned for Eligible Stays under this Promotion. Radisson reserves the right to add, modify or discontinue these terms and conditions or the Promotion with or without notice. Emirates and American Airlines in Talks About Potential Codeshare Agreement

There was an interesting piece in the Air Transport World about the remarks that the president of Emirates Mr. Tim Clark had said on a speech given at International Aviation Club in Washington this week. Mr. Clark had stated that they were in talks with two US airlines regarding code share agreements and that the talks with American Airlines had been ongoing for couple of years. Emirates already serves seven airports in the United States and has interline agreements in place with most US carriers like Delta and US airways.

Emirates and Alaska announced a frequent flier partnership on January this year and each airlines members have been able to earn both redeemable and elite qualifying miles since March 1st. Also, Emirates has had a similar agreement with JetBlu from July 1st. Thing to note here is that these are not codeshare agreements but rather just ability for both airlines fliers to earn and redeem on each other’s metal. Emirates used to have a similar agreement for earning redeemable miles on United Airlines as well, but that agreement has been terminated.

Also, Emirates and Qantas just signed a 10 year frequent flier and codeshare agreement last week where Qantas will tunnel all of their European traffic via Dubai and Emirates gets to use Qantas’ domestic network for feeding their flights out of Australia.

If American and Emirates sign a codeshare agreement, it will be American’s fourth (or fifth if El Al is included) partner in the region. Royal Jordanian, based in Amman, is a fellow Onewold member. Gulf Air, based in Bahrain, is a partner airline as is Emirates rival Etihad, based in Abu Dhabi, with whom American also has a codeshare agreement.  There has been chatter about Qatar Airways joining an alliance in the near future and it well could be Oneworld due to close ties with the head of British Airways and Qatar.

Conclusion

It is interesting to see all these partnership that Emirates is forming with number of airlines outside an alliance. Mr. Clark has already stated that Emirates doesn’t see any reason to join any of the three worldwide alliances.

I have flown quite a bit of Emirates and have Gold status on their Skywards frequent flier program. The service both on business and first class is very good and I really like the depth and selection of the onboard entertainment system.  I am not, however, huge fan of Dubai’s airport that resembles an overflowing zoo during the peak flight banks. Opening of the new terminal should easy the congestion.

British Airways Offering Bonus Avios for Fall Travel

British Airways is having a campaign for bonus Avios for all British Airways flights and transatlantic flights on American Airlines, Iberia, and OpenSkies. The number of bonus Avios you can earn is dependent of the class of service and whether it is a short or long-haul flight. American Airlines has somewhat similar offer but only for transatlantic flights.

ba-avios-offer

This offer is valid for flights between September 1 and December 16 that were ticketed after August 16, 2012. You need to register for this promotion.

ba-avios-offer-chart

Conclusion

You should consider whether it makes sense for you to take advantage of the offer from American or from British Airways. I guess that you could credit some of the flights i.e. European feeders to BA while crediting the transatlantic ones to AA.

Thing to note here is that this promotion is only eligible for higher economy fares, business and first class. If you are flying in lower economy fares, this offer probably won’t yield you anything.

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

1Booking period: 16 August – 16 December 2012
Travel period: 1 September – 16 December 2012

2 Eligible cabins and booking classes are: British Airways First (F, A), Club World (J, C, D, R, I), Club Europe (J, C, D, R, I), Comair Club (J,C,D,R), Euro Traveller / Comair Traveller (Y, B, H); OpenSkies Biz Bed (J, C, D, R, I), Prem Plus (W, E, T); American Airlines First (F, A), Business (J, D, R, I); Iberia Business (J, C, D, R, I)

Valid on (i) British Airways operated and marketed flights (please see full terms and conditions for exceptions). (ii) BA operated and AA or IB marketed or AA or IB operated and BA marketed transatlantic flights that are part of our joint business with American Airlines and Iberia. This includes flights on routes between the EU /Norway / Switzerland and the US / Canada /Mexico / Puerto Rico. (iii) OpenSkies services with BA or EC prefix from Paris Orly to Newark (iv) BA marketed flights operated by Qantas, Comair or bmi.

A Qualifying Flight is a single sector flight between the point of departure and final destination with no scheduled change of aircraft. A direct return flight counts as 2 sectors.

A longhaul trip consists of 2 shorthaul sectors in Club Europe and 2 longhaul sectors in Club World or First for flights via London (for example Rome-London Heathrow-Chicago-London Heathrow-Rome); or 2 longhaul sectors in First or Business Class for direct flights with American Airlines or Iberia between the EU (excluding London), Norway & Switzerland and the US, Canada, Mexico & Puerto Rico (for example Helsinki-Chicago-Helsinki); or 2 longhaul sectors in OpenSkies Biz Bed cabin for direct flights between Paris Orly and Newark. If the journey starts in London, corresponding bonus Avios for short haul sectors will be deducted from longhaul bonus for the missing feeder flights (ie: member traveling from London to New York will only be awarded with 30,000 Avios on the first return trip)
