British Airways changed on April 28, 2015, the number of miles it awards for economy class flights (cheapest economy was cut drastically) and miles needed for awards and upgrades (read more here).

Although not always, the earning changes usually tickle down to partner airlines as well and first one to change was Alaska Airlines by lowering them by up to 75%.

No wonder why British Airways has recently been dumping it’s Club World product ex-Europe trying to compete with the likes of Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways on price (cannot do such on their hard/soft product).

Seems that the loyalty program hackers have jumped over the pond and have now targeted thousands of British Airways Executive Club members that have found their accounts frozen as a precaution.

Members are not able to use their Avios before British Airways unfreezes their accounts. It is unclear if hackers on this British Airways case were able to use Avios in an unauthorized way like on the Hilton HHonors case.

Conrad Hilton, the great-grandson of the Conrad Hilton that founded the Hilton chain and Paris Hilton’s brother, severely misbehaved on a British Airways flight from London to Los Angeles and was arrested upon arrival.

Hilton agreed to plead guilty to a one count of simple assault that has maximum sentence of 6 months in the jail (couldn’t find the arraignment details).

British Airways emailed an account update yesterday that had interesting update about HBO (Hand Baggage Only) fares that had allowed elite members to choose their seats without charge.

This all is changing for bookings made from March 26, 2015. British Airways will allocate seats when the check in opens unless the passengers wishes to pay for the privilege of selecting a seat.

When I was reading Financial Times on an Etihad flight this past week, I came across a letter to the editor that was referencing an Avios article on the same paper earlier.

British Airways (an Iberia too) announced some drastic changes to its Executive Club program that would severely lower the number of miles earned on economy class and make redeeming for business and first class awards and upgrades more expensive (read my piece here).

Qatar Airways Buys 9.99% Stake In IAG (The Parent Of British Airways, Iberia & Vueling)

Qatar Airways announced that it as bought 9.99% stake in the International Consolidated Airlines Group, better known just as IAG, that is the parent of British Airways, Iberia and Vueling.

The stake is worth roughly $1.7B. IAG is currently in negotiations buying Ireland based Aer Lingus.

British Airways today announced changes to its Executive Club program for tickets issued on or after April 28, 2015.

The change that will hit most Executive Club members is the cut of Avios that one earns for economy class flights. These are cut from 100% to 25% of the flown miles on deeply discounted fares. The price of business and first class awards are going up as is the price of upgrades.

IAG (The Parent Of British Airways, Iberia & Vueling) Raises Its Bid To Purchase Irish Flag Carrier Aer Lingus

It was widely reported over the weekend that the IAG (International Consolidated Airline Group), which is the parent of British Airways, Iberia and Vueling, had made a new bid worth 1.34B to purchase the Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus.

This time the board of Aer Lingus is set to recommend the deal that needs to be approved by both the Irish government that owns quarter of the airline and Ryanair that holds a 29.9% share of it. Etihad Airways of Abu Dhabi also has an ownership interest in Aer Lingus.
