What Is The Most Rewarding Hotel Loyalty Program?

Last year, I wrote articles about Pros and Cons of Hilton, Hyatt, InterContinental Hotels Group/Priority Club, Marriott and Starwood Preferred Guest that the readers of LoyaltyLobby appreciated a lot. If you haven’t checked them out yet, you should. I also summarized the Pros and Cons of these five programs in one post.

Now, I am trying to tackle the issue of how rewarding these programs really are in terms of “free” nights. Of course, there is no really such a thing as a “free” night. Hotels pay for the loyalty points that are issued to you and hotels where you use them get reimbursed for the stay.

“Upcoming Changes to the Marriott Rewards Program”-Email From Marriott Rewards

The other day, I wrote about the changes coming to the Marriott Rewards program in May this year. There are more than 1300 properties moving up in award category and about 50 going down. You can find my article about this change here.

Nnow, Marriott has realized how serious this devaluation is and has sent out an email with the headline “Upcoming Changes to the Marriott Rewards Program”.

Disabling Annoying Roomkey.com Pop Ups & Unders

RoomKey is a hotel booking service backed and, at least partially, owned by Choice, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Marriott and Wyndham. The idea behind the service is to try get consumers to book more directly with the hotels own websites over OTA’s like Expedia and Booking.com.

room-key

You don’t see adverts for RoomKey anywhere, but if you access any of these hotel websites, you are likely going to see a pop ups and pop unders for the website. I don’t mind seeing it once, but especially with Marriott’s website it keeps opening RoomKey pop unders every time I am trying to make a booking or search for the price.

In most cases, the reservations are fully cancellable up until the day before without any penalty. Just make sure that you read the cancellation terms and conditions carefully. All the ones that I checked, allowed cancellations without any penalties.

My Hotel Program Strategy for 2013

The number of hotel nights that I have stayed at the hotels yearly hasn’t really fluctuated for close to ten years (as I have been living out of them). The hotel chains that I have frequented, however, has changed from year to year.

At the top tier level, the hotel chains are interchangeable. What matters to me most, are the quality of the promotions that the hotel chain is offering i.e. if someone is running an unlimited free night promotions, I will move all of my stays for the promotional period there.

Marriott Renewing Gold/Platinum Status Without Meeting Qualification Requirements

Marriott has always renewed the Gold or Platinum status if you have stayed at Marriott properties a lot in the past and just have been in short on nights one year.

marriott-renew-gold

I used to stay at Marriott hotels a lot and had couple of years with around 130 nights. My total lifetime nights are just above 500 at the present. For the most part, I stopped at staying at Marriott hotels few years ago and Marriott continued renewing my Platinum status for couple of years and then finally downgraded me Gold last year.

New Marriott Rewards Award Option – London City Cruises

Marriott Rewards just introduced a new award option in the past week – London City Cruises. You can access the Marriott’s website, where this offer is listed, here.

There is the blurb on the top stating that “premium” cruises are only available for members residing in the United States,Canada or Puerto Rico. This is likely left from the past, when Marriott was in fact offering some cruise choices for Marriott Rewards members.
