Top Hotel Promotions August 2013

Here’s my pick of the five most lucrative hotel promotions that you can take advantage of this month. There are rarely promotions at the Ritz-Carlton and their promo for a free night after two stays is a good one.

1. Ritz-Carlton Free Night Certificate For Every Two Stays

Ritz-Carlton Rewards Summer 2013 Promotion: Free Night Certificate For Every Two Stays

Ritz-Carlton has a promotion for a free night category 1-3 certificate for every two stays between July 1 and October 31, 2013.

Marriott Forcing Password Changes – Accounts & Passwords Hacked?

Last week, I wrote about the email that I had received from Marriott Regarding my Marriott Rewards account with a suggestion that I should change my password (you can read the article here). Today, when I was trying to log into my account, I was presented with the screen below.

Marriott was forcing me to change the password that I had on file with them. The text below makes no sense at all. To ensure more “secure” passwords, Marriott doesn’t allow any special characters such as *, &, %, _, – etc.

Marriott Rewards Fall 2013 MegaBonus September 15 – January 15

Marriott Rewards just launched their fall 2013 MegaBonus that is valid for stays between September 15 and January 15, 2014. You need to register for this promotion by November 15, 2013 (Marriott usually allows late registrations by contacting customer service).

Here are the options for the Marriott Rewards Fall 2013 MegaBonus:

Marriott Rewards “Welcome Back To More Rewards” Promotion (Targeted)

Seem that Hyatt and SPG are not the only two trying to woo rewards members that have not had stays for a while. Now, Marriott has sent the following “Welcome Back To More Rewards” offer to members that have not had stays for some time.

If you received this offer, you have been auto-enrolled for getting a free night category 1-4 certificate for every two stays during the sign up month + following three months. The maximum number of certificates that you can earn is maxed at two.

Hotel Promotions Update (Q3) August 2013

Here’s the monthly update on current hotel promotions. There are interesting promotions from IHG Rewards Club, Marriott & Ritz-Carlton.

Hyatt still doesn’t have a global promotion for third month in a row (long break), but launched targeted promotions for few stays. SPG is taking a break this month as well, but have already informed us about the Take Two promotion that starts on September 1. Not sure what Club Carlson is up to, as they only have promotion for bonus points in EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa).

Marriott’s Email About Hacked Accounts

Marriott sent the following email two weeks ago about unauthorized attempts to access some accounts. There has been reports from people who have had their Marriott accounts drained out of points.

What is Marriott doing wrong here?

Marriott’s Press Release About U.S. News Travel Rewards & No Blackout Dates

Earlier in the week, I started suddenly feel sick and almost threw up, when I was reading Marriott’s press release about their winning of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hotel Rewards (access the news piece here) and citing “No Blackout Dates” being one of the reasons for this.

Marriott’s “No Backout Dates” and “Standard Room Availability” is extremely misleading compared to more honest programs such as Hyatt, Starwood and even Hilton that TRULY have no black out dates and awards are available as long as standard rooms are available for sale.

Marriott Gift Card Purchase Bonus: Get 12 Southwest Rapid Rewards Points Per USD

Marriott has a new promotion for Southwest Rapid Rewards members that purchase Marriott Gift cards between August 1 and September 26, 2013, for up to 12,000 Rapid Rewards points for $1000 gift card purchase.

You can access Marriott’s web page for this promotion here. Note that you need to have your Southwest Rapid Rewards number available before you are able to access this offer.

Switching Between Marriott & Ritz-Carlton Rewards Accounts & Promotions

If Marriott Rewards & Ritz-Carlton Rewards accounts would be same (they actually really are) officially, it would be far easier to take advantage of the promotions that they have for Marriott family of hotels and for Ritz-Carlton ones.

You are not supposed to have an account for Marriott Rewards and another one for Ritz-Carlton Rewards, but you can freely switch between these two by just contacting the rewards customer service. Your membership number doesn’t change.

Marriott Gift Card 10% Purchase Bonus

Marriott is offering 10% bonus on purchase of Marriott gift cards valued from $25 to $1500 between July 1 and August 31, 2013.

Reminder To Book Hotel Stays Both Paid & Award Night By Night

It would be a time to remind all the readers that they should consider booking paid and award stays one night at a time even for longer stays. I have again received couple of emails from the readers in the past week that have run into problems, when trying to shorten award stays.

1. Reader booked a stay under the old Hilton HHonors award schedule
