Update On SPG Legacy Qualification Criteria & Account Status (Incorrect Information From Marriott Customer Service) – It Gets Worse!


Last week we wrote about a readers comment that Marriott provides customers with inaccurate information regarding status qualification by SPG legacy rules and the current account status.

After we heard the same complaints from several members I decided to start my own inquiry as I have the same problem and would need a definitive update from Marriott/SPG how many stays are currently credited.

Marriott made a news dump on Friday that their Starwood reservation database had been compromised and 500,000,000 reservation records had been leaked (read more here).

Marriott promised to start informing affected members by email on the same day (European GDPR regulation requires companies to inform within 72 hours) and I just received the notice below (no new news).

Marriott/SPG Database Hack Affecting 500,000,000 Guests (Or Reservation Records)


Marriott today announced that it had identified unauthorized access to one of its database that contained information for guest reservations at Starwood properties.

The unauthorized access had begun in 2014 and went until 2018. Potentially there are 500,000,000 guest reservations affected by this hack. Leaked information included names, email addresses, passport information, dates of birth and arrival/departure information. Payment card information of some members may also have been compromised.

Marriott has been struggling to properly integrate accounts, provide any sort of customer service and iron out glitches ever since legacy SPG members were disastrously moved to an ill-prepared Marriott Rewards platform on August 18th. It has been a complete amateur-hour from Marriott.

Marriott Rewards New Program Name “Bonvoy” Leaked


Marriott announced earlier this year that then the still separate Marriott Rewards and SPG programs would be brought together in August under one platform (Marriott’s). The new name for the combined program would be announced in early 2019.

Marriott Rewards on Tuesday updated the Terms and Conditions governing its guest loyalty program (and as always forgot to tell its members about it).

The updated T&Cs gives an indication that the Lifetime Platinum Premier statuses won’t be processed in January 2019 as originally promised. This shouldn’t come as a surprise considering how badly the loyalty program integration has gone ever since August 18th.

Marriott Rewards in October sent out emails to select members offering them a free night certificate (max 35,000 points) after two stays between October 15 – December 31, 2018.

The offer only required registration and two stays between the valid promotional dates at any Marriott brands excluding ExecuStay and Executive Apartments. I completed the stays and the cert promptly posted to my account. 

Whine Wednesdays: Marriott’s Stabilized Platform?


Well. This must be the whine topic of the year if not the entire decade that we have covered extensively (unfortunately) ever since Marriott has tried to (unsuccessfully) merge and stabilize its loyalty program platform from August 18th.
