American Airlines and United Airlines have both announced cancellations of their Hong Kong flights again as the country now requires that all crew members are tested for Covid-19.

Except the Quarantine requirement this would place passengers and crew on the same level as far as the preventive measures against coronavirus goes and airlines (or unions) decided that would be a no go.

United Airlines May Layoff Half Of Its Employees On October 1, 2020

United Airlines, according to the WSJ, is considering laying off close half of its employees (36,000) on October 1, 2020, once the government-subsidized payroll protection runs out.

The airline is still burning $40M per day ($1B+ per month) and is trying to reduce the employee numbers by using voluntary buyout programs first.

Airlines in the United States have requested and strongly suggested that passengers should use masks on flights, but there has been effectively no enforcement, and flight attendants have been mostly asked to look away.

Airlines for America, industry lobbying group, announced on Monday that their member airlines would begin “vigorously” enforcing the face-covering requirements. United and American announced that they would put non-complying passengers on their internal do-not-fly lists.

Airlines have been in search of new equity and debt financing trying to get through the current Covid-19 pandemic without a visit to the bankruptcy court or entirely collapsing.

United has today secured $5B in debt financing backed by its MileagePlus-program. The airline is currently losing $50M a day.

United Airlines Now Requires Passengers To Take Health Self-Assessment At Check-In

United Airlines has implemented new safety measures concerning passenger health and is now requiring a self declaration at the time of check-in.

According to the latest travel notice United now reserves the right to refuse any passenger for check-in who suffers from temperature over 38 C/100.4 F, cough, sore throat or muscle aches (among other symptoms).

United Airlines Will Close Their Overseas Cabin Crew Bases In Hong Kong, Tokyo and Frankfurt From October 1, 2020

United Airlines is one of the few carriers that still has cabin crew bases overseas but these times will come to an end very soon as the company just announced these bases would be closed on October 1, 2020.

All of their Hong Kong, Tokyo and Frankfurt bases will be closed and the positions there eliminated without local replacements and United will staff their flights like most other carriers – from their home bases in the U.S. and with crew layovers at the respective destinations.
