New Priority Club Point Breaks List Is Out – Valid Until July 31st, 2012

The new Priority Club Point Breaks list is out, and this time includes quite a few interesting properties like InterContinental Fiji Resort, InterContinental Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus, InterContinental Mauritius, and Indigo Shanghai on the Bund.

point-breaks

The hotels are bookable until the end of July, 2012. It is likely that the most interesting hotels will drop off the list fairly soon. It already appears that the Indigo on the Bund in Shanghai has withdrawn all the award availability until the end of July. It was available earlier when I went through the list.

There are hotels like InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, which is on the list and where I have stayed several times this year that I would NOT book using the Point Breaks. InterContinental Kuala Lumpur as well as the InterContinental Bucharest are often very inexpensive by InterContinental standards. I have earned in excess of 7K Priority Club points on average per night this year at IC stay and I will always factor that in when making redemption bookings. Also, these inexpensive IC’s help me to qualify for the Royal Ambassador status.

I have stayed at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & SPA back in February and it was a fantastic hotel. The InterContinental Aphrodite Hills in Cyprus is also very nice, but it is very HOT there during the peak of the summer. I was there few years ago for couple of nights when I was on my way to Beirut. The birthplace of the Aphrodite is close by as well as is the Paphos town. You need a car to get around, however.

From the previous list I booked the InterContinental hotels both Manila and Ho Chi Minch City for total of 12 days. Just finished those stays. Although Royal Ambassador/Ambassador benefits don’t officially apply for award stays, quite a few hotels like these two do extend them. I had just wonderful time at both of them (and what a bargain).

AviancaTACA LifeMiles Buy Miles 100% Bonus

AviancaTACA is about to join the Star Alliance later this year. They have had these buy miles offers few times a year. If you are not a LifeMiles member yet, you cannot participate to this offer. It probably makes sense to sign up so that you can take advantage of their next similar offer that will happen sometime in fall.

aviancataca-buy-lifemiles-may-2012

The offer is really simple. LifeMiles will double the number of miles that you buy during the promotional period. You can buy up to 75K miles for $2250 that will turn into 150K LifeMiles after doubling. The price of a mile thus is 1.5 cents.

aviancataca-buy-lifemiles-may-buy-screen-2012

aviancataca-buy-lifemiles-may-buy-price-2012

I am personally interested in about these LifeMiles as I have been thinking of spending couple of months later this year exploring Central America and northern South America. The airfares tend to be somewhat on the high side in this region, what I have come to expect in elsewhere. I should be able to piece something together by using United Miles on Copa, AA or LA miles on family of LAN airlines, and on AviancaTACA.

I did some award searches on LifeMiles.com and the availability at times is really spotty. Also, they apparently are charging for connections as well. I had some trouble finding a comprehensive award chart, but there is a calculator that shows the number of miles required between an origin and destination. When I was trying price an award, the number of miles required was higher, however.

Havana to Sao Paulo in Business using LifeMiles

aviancataca-lifemiles-hav-gru

According to the LifeMiles calculator the miles required for a one way in business class is from 30K to 70K on this route. The lowest amount that was shown on the award search was 40K, but then there was an option for business class redemption at 54K miles that would also earn miles.

aviancataca-lifemiles-hav-gru-miles

The same itinerary prices at 725 GBP on Opodo.

aviancataca-lifemiles-hav-gru-opodo

In this instance buying LifeMiles to use them would have hardly made any sense.

Buenos Aires to Bogota in Business using LifeMiles

This one was supposed to be just 20K in business based on the calculator. The lowest the booking engine was willing to return, however, was 26K LifeMiles.

aviancataca-eze-bog

That is actually quite ok considering that buying the ticket outright on the same flights would be $1104.

aviancataca-eze-bog-expedia

I was then interested to see what kind of fees AviancaTACA is charging for redemptions. I was really surprised to see that there are no junk fees i.e. fuel surcharges. They only charge the actual taxes.

aviancataca-eze-bog-taxes

Conclusion

You can make this buying LifeMiles to work nicely, if you are redeeming for business class and one ways. The award availability on AviancaTACA is not great, so you probably should plan in advance.

Club Carlson Park Inn by Radisson Promotion Get 44K Bonus Points for a Stay

The registration for the last Club Carlson “Buy one get one for free” promotions is now open. By registering and staying once at any Park Inn by Radisson property by July 22nd, 2012 you can get 44K Club Carlson bonus points. These points are in addition to the regular points that you would earn from the stay. There is a separate promotion for Radisson/Radisson Blu and another one for Country Inn & Suites brands

club-carlson-park-inn-stay-1-get-1-sign-up

This promotion is apparently limited to the first 20000 participants, but I am not 100% sure if they will go by that. When they run the Radisson promotion in 2011, they let the registration be open right until the end. There are likely far more people that sign up for these, but don’t then actually do the required stay.

club-carlson-park-inn-stay-1-get-1-confirmation

You need to watch a short promotional video about the Park Inn by Radisson brand before you can register either using your Club Carlson account number or the email address that you have on file with them. For some reason I didn’t receive a confirmation email that I received for the other Club Carlson promotions.

When I tried to register again, it did give me a message that I was registered. So, just in case, take a screenshot of your registration.

British Airways Avios Redemption Sale 25% Off Selected Destinations

British Airways is offering an award sale for number of destination where you can save 25% of the miles used for World Traveler (economy) and World Traveler Plus (premium economy). You need to make the booking by May 30th, 2012 for travel until the end of 2012. These discounted prices will automatically show up when you make a redemption booking using miles on BA.com.

british-airways-avios-sale-25-off

This offer also works one-way to/from London to any of the cities offered. Typically airlines price one-ways at much higher price than return tickets. So, if you happen to need an one-way ticket from/to any of these cities, it might pay to check out the availability using Avios as well.

baritish-airways-sale-zone-5

baritish-airways-sale-zone-6

baritish-airways-sale-zone-7

This sale is not that great to redeem for any of the competitive destinations. I just plugged in a RT trip to Dubai in some random dates in October and the savings using 30K Avios were paltry 71 GBP. Also, the revenue ticket would have earned some miles and TP’s (BA’s version of Elite Qualifying Miles) as well.

Avios 30K + taxes/fees of 407.36 EUROS for London to Dubai return

ba-lhr-dxb-avios

Price on Expedia.co.uk 396.99 GBP for London to Dubai return

ba-lhr-dxb-expedia

Then I tried to check out the one-way pricing from one of my favorite cities in the North America – Montreal. The BA.com was able to price the one-way correctly requiring 15K Avios and 199.86 Euros in taxes and fees. The same flight would cost $1379.70 on Expedia. So, there are definitely some savings to be had.

ba-yul-lhr-avios

Price on Expedia.com $1379.70 for Montreal to London one-way

Conclusion

This promotion makes sense if you choose non-competitive destinations, where the fares are on the high side, or travel one-way. As my Dubai examples proves, it doesn’t make sense to redeem for some destinations at all, when the fares are low. The British Airways charges very high fuel surcharges even on award tickets.

Here are the terms and conditions of this promotion as they can be found on Avios.com:

Last Chance to Buy BMI Diamond Club Miles 20% Extra (Can Transfer to Avios) and Redeem on Star Alliance

British Midland is winding down its operations as BA bought it back in April. You can still redeem BMI Diamond Club miles for Star Alliance flights excluding Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines) until the end of May. As a matter of fact, I need to get last few redemption bookings in rather sooner than later.

buy-bmi-miles-may-2012

BMI just emailed an offer to buy Diamond Club miles and they will throw in 20% extra. During the sale 24K BMI Diamond Club miles will set you back 255 GBP that is around $400. Note that there is no special link for this offer. It will show up automatically, when you go and buy the miles.

buy-bmi-miles-may-2012-points

Later in the summer you can freely transfer BMI Diamond Club miles to British Airways Avios. You can think of this BMI offer as if you are buying Avios, if you happen to need more after beginning of July.

There are great bargains from Europe to burn BMI miles to places like Maldives that I wrote about, and for intra-Asia/Pacific C/F. You will pay hefty fuel surcharges, but the number of miles needed is much lower compared to other programs.

Air Canada Aeroplan Offering Bonuses for Partner Activities

Earlier in the month Aeroplan launched a Star Challenge promotion that is still going on for more than a week. You can have some transactions to credit for both of these two promotions.

aeroplan-offer

Aeroplan has now a separate promotion going on until August 31st, 2012 where you can earn some bonus miles for up to 5 travel partner transactions for a total 2250 bonus Aeroplan miles.

aeroplan-bonus-miles-add-up

Personally, I wouldn’t go out of my way to qualify for these miles, but if you are crediting some stays for the program anyway, it makes sense to sign up for this offer as well. Just make sure that you read the small print regarding activity that qualifies for this promotion i.e. point transfers from hotel programs do not.

Here are the terms and conditions:

Members must register for the promotion in order to receive the bonus miles. A maximum of 2,250 bonus miles per member may be earned during the promotion period. Bonus miles will be credited for each of the five (5) possible transactions with Aeroplan Travel Partners to your account on the Sunday following transaction reception from the travel partner with whom you have made a transaction. Choice Hotels Summer Promotion – Stay Two Separate Times & Earn $50 Gift Card

Choice Hotels just launched their summer promotion. For every two stays you will receive 8000 Choice Privileges points that are enough for a free night at the lowest Choice redemption category hotel, OR until September 30th enough to redeem for a $50 gift card. For this promotion period Choice has lowered the number of points needed for some $50 gift cards in half.

choice-summer-promo

There are more than 1500 Choice hotels that are at 8000 Choice Privileges points per night. This promotion runs from May 17th to August 15th, 2012 and requires a registration. This offer is valid for Choice Privileges accounts that have an address in the United States or Canada.

There’s bit of a small print attached to this offer. For promotional purposes a stay is defined at least 2 consecutive nights at the following brands: Econo Lodge, Rodeway Inn, Suburban Extended Stay Hotel, and MainStay Suites. For all other Choice brands (Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality, Sleep Inn, Clarion, Cambria Suites or Ascend Collection) a stay can be 1 night and qualify for this promotion.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of these motel style hotels and haven’t stayed at one for quite some time. I am sure, however, that I could survive a night here and there, if the points earned are high enough. You can redeem Choice Privileges points for Preferred Chain properties as well, although some prefer transferring them to airlines such as Southwest.

  • You can now begin to earn an unlimited amount of gift cards during the promotion
  • Book now and after your second stay with arrival between May 17 and August 15, 2012 you’ll receive enough Choice Privileges® points to redeem for a $50 gift card of your choice for gas, dining or shopping *
  • Elite Diamond and Elite Platinum members can book through any channel
  • Click here for a list of participating gift cards

Here are the terms and conditions of this offer:

Member must register at ChoiceHotels.com before arrival and book their stays at ChoiceHotels.com or 800.4CHOICE at qualifying rates. Choice Privileges member number must be provided upon check-in. After a second qualifying stay with arrival between 5/17/12 and 8/15/12, you will be awarded enough bonus points to reach the 8,000 point level, which can be redeemed until 9/30/12 for one (1) $50 gift card at defined retailers on ChoiceHotels.com/giftcard. For Comfort Inn®, Comfort Suites®, Quality®, Sleep Inn®, Clarion®, Cambria Suites® or Ascend Collection® hotels, a stay is defined as any number of consecutive nights at one hotel regardless of check-ins or check-outs. For Econo Lodge®, Rodeway Inn®, Suburban Extended Stay Hotel®, or MainStay Suites® hotels, a stay is defined as two (2) or more consecutive nights at one hotel regardless of check-ins or check-outs. Allow 72 hours from check-out for points to post. Only members earning this bonus qualify to redeem for the $50 gift card. Only members that register for the promotion are eligible to earn the defined promotional gift cards during the promotion. Terms and conditions apply to $50 gift card options. See card for details. You must maintain an address in the U.S. (including U.S. territories) or Canada to be eligible for this promotion. Update on SAS EuroBonus Star Alliance Gold Status Match – Credentials Received

I first wrote about the status match opportunity that Scandinavian Airlines has launched for China and Hong Kong back in April. I sent in my Emirates SkyWards Gold credentials by email and received a positive reply within a day.

sas-credentials

My new SAS Eurobonus Gold card arrived this Monday to my address in Hong Kong. Surprisingly SAS gave the SAS EuroBonus Gold status all the way until June 2014. I am very impressed that SAS was able to do the status match and got the card within a month of the first email sent. This comes handy for Star Alliance lounge access as United seems to be sending out their cards very slowly….

This SAS status match opportunity is valid until the end of June, unless SAS decides to end it early.

Stealth Price Increase on Priority Club Points + Cash Awards

Priority Club has just increased the cash amount to purchase the 10K points when doing Points + Cash award redemption from $60 to $70. This was just done overnight without any communication from Priority Club.

priority-club-points-cash-price-increase

This has been a great feature of the Priority Club. When you do a Points + Cash redemption they essentially sell you the 10K Priority Club points and then withdraw the full amount required for the award from your account. If you later cancel the award reservation, you will get the full value back also, and the points purchase transaction is not reversed.

I wrote a piece about these awards back in February when I used them to book a night at the InterContinental resort in Fiji.

Personally, I don’t like IHG’s sneaky way of doing devaluations. Earlier in the year, they announced that number of properties would change in award categories, but refused to provide a list of properties moving up/down due to “competitive” reason. Hilton, Hyatt, Starwood, Marriott, and Club Carlson all provided info about their properties changing in categories. I went through all the InterContinental hotels and made an Excel sheet public about the new and old categories of all IC hotels.

Getting My United Premier 1K Status Matched to American Airlines Executive Platinum

On April 27th I wrote a piece about how American Airlines had started to poach United’s frequent fliers and match them to equivalent level on AA’s program up to Concierge Key.

aa-cards

Soon after, the program was apparently limited only to United 1K’s and Global Services members and others were given a paid challenge.

When there is a program like this that won’t go forever one should not procrastinate, like I did, but just do it immediately. I finally got my act together and decided to email my United account statement to American Airlines on May 2nd, 2012.

Had I done it on the date I wrote about this, I would have not only received the Executive Platinum status, but also 8 evips.

I have had the Executive Platinum status with AA for couple of years, but had it lapse last year, when I moved out of the States. I have a lifetime Platinum status with American due to being a 2.7 million miler with the program, although most of the miles have come from transfers from hotel programs and credit card spend.

The reason why I decided to do the match after all was that it was not once in a lifetime, and it will give me better lounge access, if I fly in economy or business, and there happens to be a first class lounge like in London, Hong Kong, and Sydney.

It took American about two weeks to verify the information I had emailed them, and received the following email earlier today:

Thanks for contacting AAdvantage® Customer Service. We’re sorry you’ve
been kept waiting.

We appreciate your desire to make American Airlines your first choice
for all your travel needs. We are eager to earn your business and your
loyalty, and are confident we can provide you with the high-quality
service you expect.

Please accept our invitation to experience some of the special benefits
we provide to members at our highest elite-status level. In a few weeks
you will receive your AAdvantage Executive Platinum® membership card,
which is valid through February 28, 2013. This unique membership affords
you all of the privileges and most of the benefits of this level,
including:

**Unlimited complimentary upgrades confirmed as early as 100 hours prior
to departure
**100% mileage bonus on the base miles flown on select carriers
**Complimentary access to Main Cabin Extra and Preferred seating
**Priority Baggage Delivery
**Waived charges for two checked bags
**PriorityAccessSM privileges at airport check-in, security and boarding
gates

Plus, you will receive 8 complimentary one-way Systemwide Upgrades if
you earn 30,000 elite-qualifying miles or points between April 24, 2012
and August 31, 2012.  Systemwide Upgrades are valid for worldwide travel
on American Airlines and allow you to confirm an available seat in the
next class of service at the time of booking (subject to availability).
Visit www.aa.com/systemwideupgrades for details about using these
upgrades.

We hope that your introduction to life at the top on American Airlines
will convince you to requalify for full AAdvantage Executive Platinum
status through February 28, 2014. You can do that by earning 100,000
elite-qualifying miles or points, or flying 100 elite-qualifying
segments, during the 2012 calendar year. For details on earning
qualifying miles or points, visit www.aa.com/elitestatus.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard the next time you travel. Enjoy
your upgrade to AAdvantage Executive Platinum status!

Fare War Over the Atlantic: Most US/Canadian Cities to London in Business Class for Less than $2K RT

There seems to be a flash fare war brewing over the Atlantic. AA and BA were advertising Queen’s Jubilee two day sale and soon other carriers were matching as well. The last day to book these is today 17th of May.

fare-war-atlantic

You can now find airfares to London on Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, United Airlines, Delta, Air France, American Airlines, Iberia, and British Airways and probably on few others as well for less than $2K return in business class.

Most of these fares have relatively tight outbound window from North America to Europe, but the return can happen within the ticket validity/fare rules.

These $2K fares out from the eastern seaboard are not that common during holiday periods. They are, however, rare from the west coast.
